Taking the first step toward support can feel like the hardest part of grief. You may not know what to say. You may wonder if your grief is "enough" to need help, or worry that talking about it will make the pain worse. Let me walk you through exactly what happens in a first grief coaching conversation, so you can walk in knowing you are safe here.
First, what grief coaching is
Grief coaching is support for the road you are walking right now. It is a space to talk honestly about your loss, understand what grief is doing in your mind and body, and find your footing one step at a time. I bring 17 years of experience as a hospice nurse who walked families through the death process, along with my own journey as a daughter who lost her daddy. I teach, I listen, and I walk beside you.
Grief coaching is not therapy or clinical treatment. If your grief brings up needs beyond coaching, I will tell you honestly and help you find the right kind of support. You will never be just a client here. You will be heard.
What actually happens in the conversation
We start with you. There is no script you have to follow. You share as much or as little of your story as you are ready to share. Some people talk for the whole session. Some people cry more than they talk. Both are welcome.
We name where you are. Grief is not one feeling. It can be sadness, anger, guilt, numbness, exhaustion, or all of them in a single afternoon. Part of our conversation is simply putting words to what you are carrying, without judgment and without a timetable. Your grief will never be rushed here, and you will never be told you should be "over it" by now.
We talk about what grief is doing in your daily life. Sleep, appetite, focus, patience with the people around you. Grief shows up in the body and in the ordinary moments. Understanding that is often the first relief people feel, because it tells them they are not broken. They are grieving.
We look at what support could look like for you. That might be one-on-one sessions, a group session with others who understand, or online sessions from wherever you are. We talk about what fits your life and your comfort, and you decide. There is no pressure and no obligation to continue.
What you do not have to do
You do not have to have the right words. You do not have to be strong. You do not have to apologize for your tears, your questions, or your hard days. You do not even have to know what you need yet. That is what the conversation is for.
Many people worry their loss does not count because it was not recent, or because it was a relationship, a dream, or a chapter of life instead of a death. Grief is grief. If you lost something or someone your heart was holding, your grief deserves support.
A word about faith
My coaching is rooted in faith, because faith is what carried me. In our conversation, prayer and scripture are available to you whenever they bring you comfort. You will be met with compassion either way. This is a safe space to heal, at your pace, in your way.
What people leave with
Most people leave their first conversation feeling lighter, simply because somebody finally understood. They leave with language for what they have been feeling, one or two gentle next steps, and the knowledge that they do not have to carry this alone. Healing is not forgetting. Healing is learning how to carry the love and the loss together.
Your story is not over. Keep healing. Keep growing. Keep becoming.
